The PHERG, a research group of CIRN, aims to be a platform of scientific research where people working on Environmental Health and Ecotoxicology subjects can interact and contribute to increase the knowledge on these areas. The Archipelago of Azores, resulted by volcanic activity in the midle Atlantic ridge, characterized by several islands still with active volcanism, presently in the form of fumaroles, solfataras, degassing soils, and hyperthermal waters, justify our main and common scientific interests, which are:
  • the impact of anthropogenic and natural pollution, especially related to volcanic activity, on humans and also on other living organisms;
  • Organismal, tissue, cell and molecular adaptations to extreme environments of volcanic origin;
  • the development of biomarkers and bioindicators of heavy metal exposure and effects;
  • the effects of natural endocrine disruptors on certain tissue and cell functions.
